Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Austrian digital vignette (e-Vignette)?
The Austrian e-Vignette is a mandatory electronic toll pass for using motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. Since 2023, it is fully digital — your vehicle's licence plate is registered in the ASFINAG database instead of a physical sticker being applied to your windscreen.
Do I need a vignette if I'm just passing through Austria?
Yes. Even if you are only transiting through Austria on a motorway, you must have a valid vignette. The 10-day vignette (€11.50) is the most cost-effective option for transit drivers.
Why is there an 18-hour activation delay for online purchases?
The 18-hour delay is a legal requirement to prevent fraud and double-purchasing. It gives the system time to process and register your licence plate. If you need immediate activation, purchase at a petrol station or ASFINAG service point in person.
Can I use one vignette for multiple vehicles?
No. Each vignette is linked to a specific licence plate and is non-transferable. If you travel with two cars, each requires its own vignette.
What happens if I drive without a vignette?
ASFINAG cameras will detect your unregistered plate. You will receive a supplementary charge of €120 plus the cost of the vignette. Repeated offences can result in administrative fines of up to several hundred euros.
Does my rental car already have a vignette?
Many Austrian rental companies include an annual vignette. Always ask your rental company before your trip. If the car does not have a vignette, you must purchase one using the rental car's licence plate number.
Can I get a refund on an unused vignette?
Partial refunds are possible for annual vignettes that have not been used on a motorway. 10-day and 2-month vignettes are generally non-refundable once the validity period has started. Contact ASFINAG directly for refund requests.
Are motorcycles treated differently?
Yes. Motorcycles require a separate motorcycle vignette, which is priced at approximately 40–50% of the car vignette price. A car vignette does not cover a motorcycle, and a motorcycle vignette does not cover a car.
What roads require a vignette?
All motorways (Autobahn, prefix A) and expressways (Schnellstrasse, prefix S) managed by ASFINAG require a vignette. Regular federal roads (Bundesstrasse, prefix B) and regional roads do not require a vignette.
How do I verify my vignette is correctly registered?
Use the official ASFINAG online checker. Enter your licence plate number and country of registration. The system will confirm whether a valid vignette is registered for your vehicle and show the validity dates.
What if I entered the wrong licence plate?
Contact ASFINAG customer service immediately after discovering the error. In some cases, corrections can be made within a short window. If you have already driven on a motorway with the incorrect plate, you may be liable for a fine even if you purchased a vignette in good faith.
Is the vignette valid in other countries?
No. The Austrian vignette is only valid on Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and other neighbouring countries have their own separate vignette or toll systems.

ASFINAG
Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft — the Austrian state-owned company responsible for planning, financing, building, maintaining, and operating the Austrian motorway and expressway network.

Motorway (Autobahn)
A high-speed, access-controlled road in Austria designated with the prefix "A" (e.g., A1 West Autobahn). All ASFINAG motorways require a valid vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

The 18-hour period between online purchase and when the vignette becomes valid for use on motorways. This delay applies only to online and app purchases; in-person purchases at petrol stations activate immediately.
Fine / Supplementary Charge
The penalty for travelling on an Austrian motorway without a valid vignette. The standard supplementary charge is €120, in addition to the cost of purchasing the required vignette. Administrative fines for repeated offences can be significantly higher.
Supplementary Toll
An additional road charge levied on specific routes beyond the standard vignette. Examples include the Brenner Autobahn section toll, Arlberg Tunnel, and Karawanken Tunnel. These are charged separately and do not replace the vignette requirement.
GO-Maut
The distance-based electronic toll system for heavy goods vehicles and buses over 3.5 tonnes on Austrian motorways. Completely separate from the vignette system.
NAP (Number Plate)
The vehicle registration plate number used to register an e-Vignette. Must be entered exactly as it appears on the vehicle registration document, including country prefix for foreign vehicles.
Pre-Sale Period
The period from December 1 to December 31 during which the annual vignette for the following year can be purchased at a slightly reduced price. A pre-sale annual vignette is valid from November 1 of the current year through December 31 of the following year.
